Highlights

The Itinerary

Starts: Nosy Be Island, Madagascar
Ends: Nosy Be Island, Madagascar

Please note, the itinerary is subject to change.

  • Friday, November 7, 2025

You’ll arrive in Nosy Be, on the northeastern tip of Madagascar, an island of lush greenery and golden beaches surrounded by the shimmering blue of the Mozambique Channel. This is where we’ll start our adventure - a place where the local culture blends with the rhythm of the sea, and our immersion experience into the magic of Madagascar kicks off.

Staying at: Nosy Be Hotel & Spa

  • Saturday, November 8, 2025

On our first full day, we’ll venture out to the Lokobe Nature Reserve to observe Madagascar’s most iconic inhabitants - the lemurs. Black lemurs are endemic to Lokobe, as well as the beautiful panther chameleon. You'll experience the rainforest as a living canvas of vivid greens painted with bursts of colour from rare orchids and flashes of wings of the exotic birds that call the canopy home. After a delicious lunch of local fare, we will meander up to Mont Passot - highest point on the island of Nosy Be - for sunset and stars. An extinct volcano, Mont Passot is at the center of Nosy Be, and will provide an excellent 360-degree vantage point to watch and shoot the sun slipping below the horizon and the stars that will emerge shortly after.

Staying at: Nosy Be Hotel & Spa

  • Sunday, November 9, 2025

Day three will find us hopping over to the mainland and driving north towards Ambilobe. You’ll find the landscape shifting with every twist and turn of the road as we head into the interior: dense rainforests give way to wide, open savannahs, with charming villages dotting the landscape. Vibrant Ambilobe makes for the perfect gateway to explore the Ankarana massif.

    Staying at: Kozobe Hotel

  • Monday, November 10, 2025

Day four will be an Indiana Jones-style adventure to Ankarana National Park - a place where the earth’s ancient forces have carved the land into something almost otherworldly, a landscape shaped by time, wind, and water into towering limestone pinnacles and labyrinthine caves. The famous tsingy, jagged spires of sharp limestone rock that rise like the spires of a forgotten cathedral, dominate from horizon to horizon. Hidden in the folds of these rocky cathedrals are caves filled with stalactites and stalagmites, one of which you’ll have a chance to explore if you wish. If we’re lucky, we might spot lemurs hopping from one improbable spire to another! Ankarana isn’t just a park; it’s a living, breathing testament to the geological forces that have shaped this land - a place where the wildness of Madagascar reveals itself in its most untamed and magnificent form. After our journey through this land of wonder we will make our way to Antsiranana, in the far north, where several turquoise bays meet.

Staying at: Le Grand Hôtel Diego

  • Tuesday, November 11, 2025

In the morning, a private boat will take us to the iconic Thousand Baobab Circuit at Cap Diego. The baobabs, with their otherworldly presence, seem to anchor the land, their age-old silhouettes casting long shadows under the early morning sun, with turquoise waters as the backdrop. The drive to Nature Lodge, at the edge of Amber Mountain National Park, will be a welcome respite from the heat of the lowlands into the mist-shrouded highlands. Arriving at Nature Lodge will feel like finding a sanctuary hidden in plain sight. The lodge itself, nestled amidst the rainforest, offers a front-row seat to the wonders of the highlands - and distant cerulean bays if the weather is clear, where the hum of the wilderness envelops you. This is a place where nature isn’t just observed but experienced: in the cool mountain air, the mist that clings to the trees, and the feeling that, for a brief moment, you’ve stepped into a world untouched by time. Here, after a rest and afternoon refreshments, we will commence a night nature walk, as so many of the animals become more active at night.

  • Wednesday, November 12, 2025

On day six we will continue to explore Amber Mountain, venturing into the forecast once again in search of lemurs and other animals and plants that only exist here. Each corner of this highland paradise offers something new: orchids blooming in secret corners, chameleons blending into the leaves, and birds that seem to weave in and out of the trees like fleeting spirits. You’ll feel the thrill of wandering under the canopy around with your telephoto lens intoxicating! After our soul-renewing forecast walk, we will enjoy some wonderful R&R time back at Nature Lodge.

  • Thursday, November 13, 2025

Day seven will find us travelling back to Ambilobe, but not before a detour to experience the positively surreal Red Tsingy. These vibrant, red-hued laterite formations rise in twisted spires and sharp ridges, their fiery colour stark against the deep blue sky. The journey through the Tsingy will fire up your imagination, and keep you busy with the camera! You’ll feel like you’ve stumbled into a whimsical alien world!

    Staying at: Kozube Hotel

  • Friday, November 14, 2025

Winding through the rural villages while we travel back to Nosy Be on day eight, the vibrant pulse of everyday Malagasy seaside life will once again reveal itself: the clatter of fishing boats pulled ashore, children chasing each other along dirt roads, the scent of local spices mixing with the salt of the ocean breeze. An afternoon relaxing, followed by a sunset and stars shooting session will be a fantastic way to cap off experiencing the bustle of Nosy Be.

    Staying at Ravintsara Wellness Hotel

  • Saturday, November 15, 2025

Nosy Iranja seems like a place that only exists in a fantasyland - the island’s signature white sandbar stretches like a ribbon between the two islets, its pristine surface surrounded by warm, turquoise waters, gleaming under the warm sun. On day nine, we will simply exist in paradise, swimming and enjoying incredible vistas. This is the perfect opportunity for reflection on our special time on Madagascar - and of course, a memorable swim! We’ll also be on the lookout for turtles (Nosy Iranja is often referred to as “the Turtle Island.), and perhaps even whale sharks! We’ll also be sure to show you one of the finest vantage points in all of Madagascar! ” We will then return to our hotel for sundown and our celebration finale dinner.

  • Sunday, November 16, 2025

On day ten you’ll have breakfast at your leisure, checkout, and airport transfers. You’ll leave Madagascar with full hearts, full memory cards, and what is hopefully one of the best travel experiences of your life.

Why northern Madagascar?

For this inaugural adventure, we chose to focus on the northernmost portion of the country for a number of reasons, including the fact that transportation on the island is a challenge, and our scouting mission has revealed that trying to cover too much ground only results in a lot of time on the road, and minimal time for photography. We’ve also found that the north offers the most variety in terms of photography subjects, with reasonable road connections between them all.

Is this trip for you?

Madagascar is truly a diamond in the rough. It is a raw place at times, but it harbours infinite potential for stunning imagery and memorable experiences. It is the perfect destination for those who have a spirit of curiosity, an appreciation for natural wonders and a desire to really get off the beaten track. This will certainly be an adventure, but we take all the work out of the planning, allowing you to come along for one exquisite, occasionally bumpy, ride. Though some areas are more rugged and off-the-beaten track, you’ll be in the capable hands of two seasoned travellers, as well as the top-rated local operator in Madagascar. We have custom built this trip from scratch, keeping in mind years of experience of personal travel and photography workshops to ensure optimal enjoyment, and maximize creative time.

Essentials

Passports + Visas

To travel internationally you’ll need a valid passport. Note that most countries require your passport to be valid for 6 months beyond your travel dates, so be sure to check expiry. It’s also advised you carry a copy of it with you and/or store it safely online. We will require your passport information in order to ensure everything is ready for your arrival.

All foreign passport holders need a tourist visa to enter Madagascar. A visa is easily obtained at the Nosy Be airport upon arrival.

Drinking Water

Please avoid drinking from any taps or natural sources on this trip, as it can lead to illness. We will provide you with bottled water. We recommend you bring your own water bottle should a larger safe dispensing option be available.

Money + Credit

This is an all-inclusive experience, but you may choose to have cash on you for contingencies, souvenirs and other purchases. We do not recommend you solely rely on credit or debit cards, as internet is often unreliable. It’s best to bring Euros or USD, which you can exchange into local currency (Ariary). You will also be taking you to an ATM in Nosy Be upon arrival if you so choose. Some ATMs will only work with VISA cards.

Responsible Travel

Being part of a small group will inevitably require some accommodating to different traveller’s needs and preferences. As we travel together, Paul Zizka Workshops promotes a spirit of respect and compassion with our fellow group members, our guides and the people and landscapes we come in contact with along the way.

We appreciate if any issues are addressed privately with our group leaders in a respectful and productive manner so that we all might enjoy a spectacular time together.

Contingencies

If there is anything we’ve learned about travel, it’s to expect the unexpected, especially in a place where tourism is in its infancy like Madagascar. “Go with the flow, and trust the system” will be our motto! We will work rigorously to plan for every possibility, however, we cannot predict all the circumstances we’ll encounter, in particular a Force Majeure event. Should an emergency arise, you will be responsible for covering the difference incurred by alterations to our itinerary, as well as any incidental expenses that may arise. Please have contingency funds available for any of these unavoidable changes, and speak to your insurance provider about coverage prior to purchasing it.

Local Language

The official languages of Madagascar are Malagasy and French. Paul is fluent in French (it is his first language) so you’ll be in great hands when it comes to communicating with the locals while you are there. Our guide(s) also speak English.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is mandatory on this trip, including insurance for medical expenses and emergency repatriation. We also recommend you purchase a policy for personal liability, trip cancellation or interruption and lost baggage fees. We will need to see proof of your insurance prior to departing.

Level 3: Moderate / Active

This trip is suitable for travellers who lead active lives, are comfortable participating in a range of activities, and expect occasional small amounts some physical exertion.

The trip will feature some long touring days, and an occasionally active itinerary. Participants must be able to carry their day photo bag; sit or stand for over 2 hours; be in good health, mobile, able to participate in 3 hours of physical activity per day (our photo time!). We will occasionally be walking uphill or downhill (low angle) on uneven trails in order to find the wildlife. The humidity will also take a toll at times. However, we will have three leaders, and several guides everywhere we go, and so we will be able to accommodate different paces, interests and circuits to make sure everyone shoots, enjoys and stays comfortable!

Paul did all the excursions with sneakers on his inaugural visit, but those who hike less frequently may want more ankle support.

  • Whether you're coming from North America, Europe or Oceania, getting to Madagascar is actually a lot more simple than most people think given the distance that needs to be covered.

No matter where you are located, chances are you can get to the isolated, exotic island within a maximum of 3 flights thanks to the nearby transportation hubs of South Africa and Ethiopia, and thanks also to a direct link to France.

We highly recommend you add a little time to your layovers in order to discover over wonderful, far-flung corners of the world! You will find there are many options for entering the country via Nosy Be (where our itinerary begins/concludes).

  • We will do our best to communicate these with our operators in Madagascar. We advise guests with intolerances and allergies to be prepared with any medicines, and also bring certain food stocks from home that might help them supplement along the way. We will work with each guest to make sure they have everything they need prior to departing for the trip.
